Ein Deutsches Requiem

 Dr. L. Randolph Babin retired from Lamar University, in 2005, with thirty-eight years of full time teaching. During that time he served as Chair of the Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance (2000-2005) and Director of Choral Activities (1981-2001). In May of 1995, he was awarded the title, Regents’ Professor of Music, in recognition of his distinguished teaching.

Dr. Babin has conducted the Beaumont Interfaith Choral Society on numerous occasions. He directed the Symphony of Southeast Texas Chorus from its inception in 2000 through the performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana in April of 2003. He has also directed the St. Jude Chorale, St. Jude Catholic Church in Beaumont, since 1980. Dr. Babin is an active clinician in the state of Texas where he has conducted numerous workshops, clinics, and All-Region Choirs. He is also a composer of sacred choral music published by GIA Publications.

A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Dr. Babin received the degrees: Bachelor of Music Education (1965), Master of Music Education (1968), and Doctor of Philosophy (1987) from Louisiana State University where he studied voice and choral conducting with Dallas Draper and instrumental conducting with L. Bruce Jones. Whereas his primary accomplishments have been in choral music, he has had considerable experience in opera, musical theater, and instrumental music. He served as Music Director/Conductor of the Beaumont Civic Opera from 1976 to 2000, and has guest conducted the Lake Charles Symphony Orchestra and the Beaumont Symphony Orchestra on several occasions.

 

 

 

 

James J. Han, DMA, director of choral activities for Lamar University, conducts both the A Cappella Choir and the Grand Chorus. Dr. Han received a Doctor of Musical Arts in choral conducting and literature from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and he earned a Master of Music with honors in choral conducting from the prestigious Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J.

A native of Seoul, South Korea, Dr. Han has taught at the University of Illinois and at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill.  He has also trained many church choristers.

While in New Jersey, Han performed with the world-renowned Westminster Choir and the Westminster Symphonic Choir in performance with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the New Jersey Symphony, and Spoleto Festival USA. He also founded and directed the Mid-New Jersey Men's Chorale.

 Dr. Han was worked with high school university, church, and professional choirs, including Knox College Men's Vocal Ensemble, South Dakota School of Mines & Technology Concert Choir and Master Chorale, University of Illinois Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, and Varsity Men's Glee Club.  Dr. Han received public attention with his acclaimed concert of Rober Schumann's Requiem op.148, with a full chorus and orchestra, at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
